GoingWare Creates FireWire™ Encrypt™ for WiebeTech
OWL'S HEAD, ME - January 7, 2003 - A Maine software consulting firm located in Owl's Head has developed a ground-breaking technology that will be showcased at the MacWorld Expo, opening in San Francisco today.
GoingWare Inc. developed FireWire Encrypt under contract to WiebeTech LLC of Wichita, Kansas. The security product makes portable hard drive encryption accessible to the general public.
WiebeTech will demonstrate the technology to the public for the first time in booth #1651 at MacWorld San Francisco January 7 through January 10.
"I am pleased that WiebeTech will be highlighting my efforts. I worked hard on this product, and I am proud of what I have done for my client." said GoingWare founder Michael D. Crawford, a fifteen year veteran of the software industry. "After moving to Maine from California, I found the environment for technology development here is very welcoming."
Crawford also noted that the Internet has made it possible to live anywhere and work everywhere. "I can live in a beautiful place and be more productive than in a cubicle in a crowded city." GoingWare has also done remote software development for clients from California, Canada, France, England and The Bahamas.
FireWire Encrypt makes data secure by encrypting each sector of the user's hard drive with the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Advanced Encryption Standard, which uses the Rijndael block cipher.
Upon hearing that FireWire Encrypt uses his encryption method, Rijndael co-inventor Vincent Rijmen commented, "This sounds like the kind of application that every algorithm designer dreams of."
FireWire Encrypt is easy to use because the only software the user need install is a small applet for entering the passphrase. There is no complicated operating system-level software to install or configure.
The product is portable because FireWire is a hot-pluggable serial bus that is used externally to the computer. The user just attaches the device to their computer with a FireWire cable, enters their secret passphrase when prompted, and then uses FireWire Encrypt like any other disk drive.
A typical application for the product might be the storage of confidential business data that is carried between the user's home and office. The encrypted device will be easy to connect to and disconnect from each computer it is used with, and the user can feel safe that their private information will not be revealed if the storage device is lost or stolen.
While WiebeTech will demonstrate FireWire Encrypt on Macintoshes running Mac OS X, the product will support Windows, Linux and classic Mac OS when it is released to the public.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology selected the Rijndael block cipher last year from a field of five finalist algorithms for the new Advanced Encryption Standard. As a Federal Information Processing Standard, AES is approved for use by U.S. Government organizations to protect sensitive, unclassified information.
The Advanced Encryption Standard was created in a four-year cooperative effort by the government, private industry and academia to develop an encryption technique that can keep data secure for years to come. The NIST's home page for AES on the web is at:
