I thought you'd be interested to know how many people are reading my new article, as well as how they're finding it on the search engines.
I use the Analog web server log file analyzer to find out how many people are visiting my site, as well as how they are finding it. Analog is Free Software, highly configurable and powerful, but I'm afraid it is fairly hard to learn how to use. There are many log file analyzers available, some Free and some proprietary. I'm sure if you look, you can find one that's easier to use, but if you're comfortable with command lines and writing configuration files, do give Analog a try.

Note: Traffic to the article has increased dramatically since 261 file traders were sued by the RIAA on September 8th. The following chart shows the numbers of hosts served per day since the article was first posted to my website. Dates to notice are September 8, RIAA sues 261 file traders, and September 9, One of them is a 12 year old girl.
The chart shows the number of distinct IP addresses the article has been served to each day. I feel that's a more accurate count of the number of people who've read the article than the number of times the page has been served, because some people reload the page. During the month of September, the figures were calculated for each day but for other times are typically averaged over about ten days.
My prediction is that traffic to the article will increase every time the RIAA achieves significant press coverage of its terror campaign. However, I suggest that while their efforts may have the effect of reducing copyright infringement, it will not result of increased sales of compact discs published by RIAA member companies. Instead, fans will find other music to download, and any increased CD sales will be made by artists who offer free music downloads as a promotional tool.
Search Queries
I was pleasantly surprised to find my article showing up prominently on the search engines after being posted less than a week.
These are all the queries that anyone has ever used to find the article. If you click the "Search" links, you can try out the search yourself on the indicated search engine. To open a new window for the search, right-click on Windows or control-click on a Mac. Heaven only knows what will work for you on Linux.
I'll check the rankings from time to time and update them - so the rankings are current as of the last time I tried each search. A rank in the top ten will be on the first page of search results at Google, while MSN shows the top fifteen on the first page. A "-" in the rank column means the page wasn't found in the first five pages of search results.

Sometimes the users who entered the search query may have quoted all or part of their query to force a search for an exact phrase. A search for "legal music downloads" will yield somewhat different results than a search for legal music downloads without the quotes. Unfortunately, Analog doesn't provide a way to distinguish them, so all the test searches are unquoted.

My web server logs tell me that the most common search query used to find my article is legal music downloads. Today I was quite stoked to find my article is now ranked #1 at Google for that query. Try the search yourself. My article now ranks #1 or #2 at Google for many of the other following search queries, with the rankings for most search queries steadily increasing over time.
My article's high ranking at Google is a direct result of the links that many of you have given it from around the web.
I have been surprised to find out that this page on the search keywords for my article now ranks highly in the search engines for many of these keywords, frequently placing ahead of the actual article. I think that's because the way I present the search terms causes them to form exact phrase matches.

Wow. Now that was a lot of work. While I found it informative to check all those searches (I found some more sites to link to for example), I don't think I want to go through that again until I come up with a way to have a program find my article's rankings automatically. It might be a while.
